In collaboration with the Kauai Historical Society (KHS) and Kaua`i Community College (KCC), OHA Kaua`i invites you to join them for John Kalei Laimana Jr.’s presentation on ‘The Phenomenal Rise to Literacy in Hawai`i in the Early Nineteenth Century’. This high rate of literacy unique and unparalleled in the recorded history of the world has remained in relative obscurity.  Laimana’s thesis research of published and unpublished records and oral history interviews provides insight into the phenomenal achievement by Hawaiians reflected by their extensive writings in over 100 newspapers.

John Kalei Laimana Jr on Literacy

John Kalei Laimana Jr. is a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of Hawai`i and an instructor at Leeward Community College in the Hawaiian Studies Department.
